Today we took the River Cat boat into Sydney. After eating a delicious lunch at a French patisserie, we decided to explore the Royal Botanic Garden (located close to Circle Quay and the Opera House). Since the grounds are quite large (75 acres), we got tickets for a tram tour that wound its way through the paved pathways in the gardens. While we were waiting for our tram, we sat in the grass and watched the girls play with a group of Australian children... they were all chasing each other and pretending to be seagulls. :) The weather was really nice today... 70's and sunny.
The Royal Botanic Garden is home to about 25,000 large fruit bats (aka flying foxes). In many trees, we could see at least a hundred bats hanging from the branches. Since there are no natural predators for the bats in the gardens, their numbers have increased substantially. The trees and gardens are becoming damaged, and so the city has decided to relocate the bats (but this project has not yet begun).
We also visited the aquarium, but I didn't take any pictures... maybe James will post some. :) Connie
